Messaging for shift workers

Role
Senior product designer
company
Deputy
Duration
1 year

Deputy is a rostering, timesheet and HR software that is used by businesses to schedule and connect their employees. Being the lead designer of the project, I  created an experience that allows shift workers to connect with their team.

Results

x2.5 increase in employee engagement through reactions

Successfully tested proof of concept with 15 customers

The problem

Whilst Deputy's News feed provides businesses with a virtual 'noticeboard', this tool has limited functionality did not allow for effective team communication. Engagement was low, with a lot of employees missing important announcements and has resulted in customers turning to other messaging applications.

Goals

01 /

Provide a communication solution for shift workers

02 /

Design an experience that is integrated within the Deputy app

03 /

Partner with Stream to develop an MVP for customers

Research insights

Communicate with the right people

Right now, managers find it difficult to  connect with groups of people with the current News feed experience. Issues with access level, location setup and permissions resulted in inefficient communication.

Managers want visibility and control

Customers want oversight of the conversations happening within the workplace to improve operations as well as manage any inappropriate communications between team members.

Increase employee engagement

There were challenges with ensuring posts were read and confirmed in the News feed. Businesses are seeking more employee engagement to the announcements.

One app for work

Increasingly, customers have an appetite to have their work-related applications in one, rather than switching across multiple platforms.

“If Deputy communications were better maybe, maybe some of those kind of communications about things like shift swaps, necessary coms would take place on there rather than WhatsApp.”

— VR company (UK)

“We’ve tested WhatsApp but for obvious reasons, we want to keep it central to one platform where someone is scheduled.”

— Events business (USA)
